The Samya Rose Stumo Memorial Initiative for Universal Quality Healthcare

Samya Stumo was an emerging leader in global health. As described by her family, “Samya was passionate about revolutionizing global health, especially reducing obstacles for women. She cared most about treating all people and patients as human beings, particularly in the context of their culture, family, and individuality. Samya was infectiously vibrant, intensely curious, and lived her life to the fullest. She had leadership, compassion, and intellectual rigor.” Samya died tragically at age 24 in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 on March 10, 2019. Despite being an early career professional, Samya made a lasting impact within the global health realm. She was dedicated to achieving universal health coverage, including improving access and quality to those in greatest need.

In memory of Samya Stumo, the initiative aims to find talented young leaders to extend Samya’s vision and mission for low- and middle-income countries, and areas to affect change focusing on human-centered healthcare. The initiative is implemented by the ThinkWell Institute, a 501(c)(3), and is governed by the Stumo family.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the initiative, click here to learn more.

About the Fellowship

ThinkWell is seeking proposals from visionary women with transformative solutions to improve healthcare around the world. Affordable access to quality healthcare is within reach. Through catalytic or disruptive initiatives, we believe progress towards this goal will be accelerated.

This initiative aims to support innovators, and trailblazers to realize their vision that may not otherwise be achieved without this investment. We are looking for ideas that speak truth to power, introduce new models of health care, identify innovative ways of harnessing technical assistance, cultivate leaders or galvanize civil society.

Winning proposals will receive up to $100,000 USD per year for up to two years, along with logistical support in-country. ThinkWell will help Fellows achieve their vision by providing seed-funding, leadership development, hands-on support, and networking opportunities.

Preferred countries include Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Philippines, Uganda, as well as other countries. We welcome applications from all over the world, especially from those in low- or middle-income countries.

— Applications are open to women of all nationalities.
— Must have achieved a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred.
— Proven dedication towards a cause.
— Potentially transformative approaches.
— New perspectives on the problem at hand.

Proposals Must

  1. Clearly articulate a vision and plan for how they will support universal access to quality healthcare.
  2. Have the potential for scale and depth at reasonable costs.
  3. Explain how the activities proposed will lead to the results expected, based wherever possible on experience and data.
  4. Focus on a specific country or community, but with applications beyond that locality.

The fellowship is still undergoing development and fundraising. We are not accepting applications at this time.
